In General…

Be sure that you leave 2 feet on both sides of Roll Up Door to clear the metal column.  The building widths and lengths are generally divided into bays of 20-25′ widths.

Be sure to choose Roll Up Door heights to be 2′ lower than building height.  Choose 3′ less when placing in an Endwall of 1:12 roof pitch model, or if Portal Framing is required because there is not a Bay remaining for X-Bracing.  Click to Learn more.

General Information

Our commercial-grade steel building roll-up doors are designed and manufactured for strength and durability. Our roll-up doors are the backbone of our business. Whether you are a door dealer or metal building contractor, we have the commercial roll-up doors to satisfy your needs.
Our commercial doors use heavy-duty brackets made of .187-thick angle. Our commercial doors also have a high-cycle spring life and continuous-duty design. The commercial doors are wind load tested in accordance with IBC, FBC and TDI. Our steel curtain roll-up doors are easy to install and require minimal maintenance. We have a variety of models and colors available from which to choose. Our commercial doors have electric motor capabilities and multiple mounting options including steel, wood, masonry and concrete.

Curtain

Our commercial doors are manufactured with hard, Grade E steel ensuring strength and durability. A siliconized polyester finish replaces older polyester paint finishes, which are recognizable by severe chalking and fading from direct contact with UV rays. DBCI steel curtain roll-up doors are coated with a silicon polyester paint highly resistant to UV light rays allowing some colors a warranty of up to 25 years.

The A.C.E. (Advanced Curtain Engagement) guide system has been designed to benefit our customers. Some of the benefits include universal mounting options, increased durability, excellent performance and ease of installation. Through countless hours in the design room, DBCI has created one of the most advanced rolling sheet door guide systems in the industry.

Axle-Drum Assembly

Our commercial door axles and drums are manufactured with industrial-grade steel. The door drums are designed and engineered specifically for commercial application to ensure product integrity, long life and high-capacity use. Steel ball bearings are preferable to nylon or plastic bushings, which can disintegrate under heavy use.

Springs

Springs are the most critical mechanical component of a steel curtain roll-up door. For maximum reliability, Our uses only oil-tempered torsion-type springs for its commercial grade steel curtain roll up doors. Coordinating the design of a roll-up door with the proper spring assembly ensures longer and more durable use with minimal maintenance required. In independent tests, Our commercial-grade steel curtain roll-up door exceeded 40,000 openings and closings before any maintenance was required. Although there is no such thing as a maintenance-free door, at Our we engineer our roll-up doors to be maintenance-simple: easily visible for inspection and accessibility.

In summary, you should be familiar with the following codes prior to building purchase:

More About Roof Snow Loads – Pound per Square Foot

Typical snow loads in the United States can range from 4  to 60+ lbs per square foot depending on precipitation. Obviously, in warmer climates there are 0 lb minimum snow load requirements, whereas, in colder states where snow and ice hardly have a chance to thaw before the next storm, roof snow loads can be greater than 60 lbs per square foot.  In addition, snow tends to drift and accumulate heavier in some spots than others, which is why snow loads are a factor in addition to the standard dead loads of a building.

More About Wind Codes – Miles per Hour

Wind load is also determined by patterns of climate local to your building site. Wind speed codes range from 0 mph to over 160 mph winds.

Wind, unlike snow, will affect different portions of the building not limited to only the roof.  The wind’s effects on your steel building structure will vary depending on your building design and how it sits on your property.  During the software designing process, strength factors are determined by building height, the size and number of large framed openings, and even the location of those openings.

Wind Exposure

Also in relation to wind is the exposure of your building. Exposure B or C is site-specific.  For example, in gusty areas, your local building department may require Exposure C if there are no windbreaks provided by your surroundings, such as trees or neighboring buildings. Wind exposure also affects how snow tends to drift and accumulate on your building structure.

Contact Your Local Building Department Early for Governing Codes, such as IBC – 2015

While your metal building broker will ask you to confirm these codes per your local building department, the MBS (design and pricing software used by your broker) will recall default minimums when the representative enters your building site ZIP code.  In many occasions, the local building department will ask you for higher than minimum requirements and dictate which building code year governs these specifics. For example, IBC 2015 or NCBC 2014 (International Building Code for year 2015, or North Carolina Building Code for year 2014, etc.)  

In summary, contact your local building department to get specific governing year code, roof snow requirement, wind speed requirement, and the wind exposure requirement specific to your building site address and ZIP code.
